The town remains one of the most powerful expressions of a community’s identity and shared values. More than a physical environment, it embodies collective memory, culture and social relationships.
Over the centuries, Maltese towns evolved around churches, squares and streets that served as the social and civic heart of local communities. Today, however, rapid urbanisation and demographic growth have profoundly transformed this historic landscape.
While Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs) continue to safeguard the historic cores of towns and villages, development beyond these boundaries has often altered the relationship between people and place. Continuous urban expansion, shrinking residential spaces and changing housing standards have contributed to a gradual erosion of local identity and social cohesion.
As the German critic, philosopher and writer Walter Benjamin observed, modern society has reached the paradox whereby neighbours often no longer know one another. Courtyards, streets and public squares, once natural extensions of domestic life, have gradually lost their role as spaces of everyday interaction.
Historic architecture fostered a continuous dialogue between private and public space. Preserving this legacy is not only about protecting buildings; it is about safeguarding the sense of belonging, memory and community that gives meaning to the city itself.
Preserving Our Past to Build Our Future reminds us that our heritage is not static. By protecting it today, we ensure that future generations continue to be inspired, informed, and connected through the stories of the past. European Heritage Days (EHD) 2026 is taking place all throughout October.
Together, let us celebrate and protect our heritage—not just as relics, but as guiding stories for our future.
