Iconic HMV signage to be restored and replicated
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has been working closely with the owners of D’Amato Records and the appointed conservator to ensure the preservation and restoration of the iconic HMV signage that was recently damaged in Valletta.
On Thursday afternoon, the Superintendence supervised the careful dismantling and lowering of the sign. This process, executed according to an agreed methodology with the conservator, involved securing the sign to ensure its safety during the work, dismantling the anchoring points from the wall, and then gently lowering the sign to the ground using a crane. The sign and its loose or broken parts were then wrapped in conservation-grade materials to protect them during transport to a laboratory for further study and conservation treatment.
Once restored, the original sign will be displayed inside the shop, with a replica planned to hang outside in place of the original.
All work is being conducted under the supervision of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
