Throughout the 1980s, the pivotal role of audiovisual heritage in enriching our understanding of the past became increasingly evident. In tandem with this awareness, there also emerged a growing recognition that these artefacts should be handled with the same reverence and preservation measures traditionally afforded to historical relics. Despite being relatively recent in the realm of cultural heritage, this medium serves as a unique portal to bygone events, granting us access to experiences otherwise beyond our reach.
As with any other primary source, audiovisual materials grant us the privilege of witnessing past events, immersing ourselves in the voices of generations gone by, and illuminating historical landscapes that have evolved or disappeared, all with an almost real-time quality.
In this light, films, video recordings, as well as radio and television programmes stand as fundamental components of cultural heritage, deserving protection as audiovisual sources of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The significance of audiovisual heritage received a notable recognition with UNESCO’S designation of the 27th of October as 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞, underscoring its enduring significance.

Lejn is-snin tmenin (1980s), fhimna kif l-materjal awdjoviżiv huwa wkoll artefatt primarju li joffri għarfien fuq il-passat, u għalhekk għandu jkun protett daqs materjal aktar tradizzjonali. Dan il-media, għalkemm pjuttost riċenti meta tqabblu ma’ sorsi oħra, joffri bħal tieqa għall-passat fejn nistgħu naraw b’għajnejna l-ġrajja sseħħ quddiemna daqslikieku qed isseħħ dak il-ħin.
Dan il-media bħala wirt kulturali jipprovdi tieqa għad-dinja tal-passat hekk kif nosservaw avvenimenti li ma nistgħux nattendu, nisimgħu vuċijiet mill-imgħoddi li ma jistgħux jitkellmu aktar, u jgħinna nifhmu il-passat bħal kull sors primarju ieħor.
Films, video recordings, programmi tar-radju, u programmi fuq it-televiżjoni huma parti integrali tal-patrimonju, u għandhom ikunu protetti bħala parti mid-dokumenti awdjoviżivi tas-seklu għoxrin u wieħed u għoxrin.
Fl-2005 il-UNESCO għażlet is-27 ta’ Ottubru sabiex ta’ kull sena tiġi mfakkra bħala l-𝐉𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐢 𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥-𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐣𝐮 𝐀𝐰𝐣𝐝𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐯. L-għan għal din il-ġurnata kommemorattiva hu biex jinħoloq għarfien għall-importanza tal-preservazzjoni tal-media permezz ta’ esibizzjonijiet, pubblikazzjonijiet, u seminars dwar is-suġġett.
Is-Sovrintendenza tal-Patrimonju Malti hija ħerqana biex ixxerred l-għarfien dwar aspetti tal-kultura li huma inqas magħrufin, u hija grata tal-opportunita’ li titkellem dwar dan is-suġġett tant interessanti fuq 𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒂 𝒖 𝑳𝒊𝒍 𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒂, hekk kif niċċelebraw il-Jum Dinji għall-Patrimonju Awdjoviżiv ta’ UNESCO.
